How Well Flavored Fluralaner Chews Work
Fluralaner is a strong insecticide and acaricide that works quickly and lasts for a long time. This study looked at how well tasty fluralaner chews (Bravecto®, Merck Animal Health) worked against adult Ctenocephalides felis felis and their eggs when given to dogs.
Methods
Twelve dogs that were raised to do a specific job were split into two groups of six dogs each. Dogs in treatment group 1 were given a single fluralaner-flavored chew that gave them at least 25 mg/kg. Dogs in treatment group 2 were not given any medicine, so they were used as standards. On Days 2, 28, 56, 84, 91, 98, 105, 112, and 120 after treatment, about 200 C. felis felis (KS1 strain) cat fleas that hadn’t eaten yet were put on each dog. Forty-eight hours after treatment and 48 hours after each infestation, eggs were collected over a 3-hour period, counted, and their viability was established. Dogs were brushed to get rid of any fleas that were still there.
Results
The number of fleas on dogs that were given fluralaner by mouth dropped by 100% 48 hours after treatment and 48 hours after every flea infection after treatment until Day122. Within 48 hours of treatment with fluralaner, the number of eggs laid by dogs was cut by 99.9% (two eggs from one dog), and after that, not a single egg was found in any of the treated dogs. At all post-treatment checks, the number of adult fleas and the number of flea eggs on fluralaner-treated dogs were much lower than on non-treated dogs (P 0.001). After 48 hours, the two flea eggs that were taken from the single dog that had been treated did not turn into adult fleas. No viability test was done because no more eggs were taken from the treated dogs.
