I grew up on the prairies and my early influences include clouds, lightning, frost and snow. Somewhere along the way I became obsessed with patterns and then I developed a further interest in illuminations, engraving and grafitti, all of which have been insinuating their way into my work like the tendrils of sweet peas ever since.

When Rick asked me to be a part of his Playground project, his explanation of developing 26 characters that would begin thoughts rather than sentences gave me pause. I had to think about that for a while. I decided I wanted to use full words; words that might begin thoughts. Not words like "Duck,""Mortuary" or "Embryo," but words like "Perhaps," "Lamentably," or "Despite." Words that I myself might use in one of my own opinionated diatribes.

However the concept of creating not only the illuminated initial but some kind of font for the rest of the word was more than I could handle. I thought of using Times Roman, which I thought would be kind of funny, but one day while having a bath in the middle of the afternoon, just as I was sinking under the water to rinse my hair, I had the answer. Pixel font.

It seemed like the perfect idea. Not only did it make my life easier (or so I thought before I embarked on drawing curves, pixel by pixel), but I could make it work with Thirstype\'s Pizzelle, which would be useful and familial. Also, there are lots of ornamental things out there, but none in pixel form (that I knew of), so I would be creating something quite unique all \'round.\'

And so the process began. My pen-mouse started acting up part-way through the project and I had to develop a new, stange stroking action to get my 1-pixel marks. Vast amounts of Cheerios saw me through the days and nights, and after extended play I began to notice strange patterns in iTunes "random play." It became apparent that iTunes has its own taste in music which it would attempt to foist upon me, including, inexplicably, a daily dose of Jethro Tull\'s "Aqualung." iTunes steeered me towards Peter, Paul and Mary, I steered it back to Pearl Jam; it wandered into Steve Earle, I force restarted it with Baby Mammoth. I battled iTunes and pixels simultaneously, until the project was done. Can you see the battle scars in the letterforms? I can. Here Tim Buckley, there Daniel Lanois; and there, a Cheerio.

Visit Marian\'s site, Quatrifolio

'

My presentation of the collection of Playground experiments dovetailed with UIC\'s first architectural assignment of the fall semester - design an alphabet.

On that day four studio classes had come together in a large forum space with their work already in progress mounted and ready for my comments. If they only knew I know nothing. Only one student continued the threads that day\'s conversation related to typography. His name is Alex Al-Hamdan, an architectural sophomore who\'s formative creative activities included designing and implementing street graffiti in both Kansas City and Chicago.

Alex proposed a Playground \'04 alphabet made up the auditory expression of each letter. This vernacular voice from the street and intentional lack of immediate legibility is all part of Alex\'s purposeful context.

While his formal constructions are quite architectural in their third dimension, Alex suggests that when designing his letter forms he relates his thought process more to playing chess; "I\'m always playing two moves at once-- the complex form itself and the relationships between the individual strokes." Hidden in Alex\'s methodology is a little secret he enjoyed sharing with me. "When I think about graffiti, I imagine letterforms having intercourse with one another." Regardless of what went into this work, Alex\'s magically playful alphabet will at least make for perfect coloring book pages for those of us in the suburbs.

'}

Instead of fixed letterforms a set of alphabetic structures allows the sampling and construction of a variety of typographic remixes. In this sense TJ is an instrumental device, a digital »TJing« tool everybody can play with to mix and compose lettershapes. With color as an additional design element there are plenty of different variations possible [the 26 characters shown at playground are just a selection out of many possible letter compositions].

TJ is an attempt to redefine letterforms in accoustic terms, reconsidering rhythm and sound, modulation and transformation, alluding to the aesthetics of electronic music.

TJ comes in 2 different font sets: background and alphabetical structures (14 fonts alltogether) which can be combined as well as superimposed. The overall design is based on a rigid grid with the size of a 1000 by 1000 em units divided by 40. All structures are »synchronized« which makes it possible to play many »tracks« simultaneously. The background structures fit together perfectly and form patterns when the pointsize equals the lineheight. Bananas are often perceived a male phallic symbol, however after the banana is removed the peel has very fluid, graceful and feminine curvatures but yet retains its male overtones. I also thought it was funny because the banana has been removed of its parts! The simplicity of the physical process in creating these forms is a bit ironic to the subject matter. No psychological counseling or hormonal therapy treatment was involved to make "the change." Take off peel, create form and scan, yep it was that easy. Each form was created from a single banana\'s peel, however three bananas were utilized due to the quick browning process of the peels.

—

Currently I am pursuing my MFA in graphic design at Eastern Michigan University.

'

bio: 'Roe V Wire was inspired by my concern over George W. Bush\'s recent opportunities to nominate new supreme court justices and the potential judicial infliction these nominations could have on the 1973 ruling of Roe V. Wade. Throughout time, women of higher status (for their own reasons) have been just as likely to have an abortion as with other classes of women, but their economic means have afforded them a secretive and professional resolve, even though prior to 73\' they were breaking the law as well. The Roe V. Wade decision protects women and maintains our isonomy – the equal distribution of rights and privileges.

Roe V Wire is a reminder of the brutal style of abortions women outside of wealth and power experience. "Back-street" and self-induced abortions worldwide cause 30-50% of all maternal deaths from pregnancy and childbirth. Other complications include: punctured intestines, perforations leading to internal hemorrhaging, infection of fallopian tubes or ovaries, fetal malformation, and laceration of the cervix or vagina.

All of the mangled letter forms were bent by hand using one hanger for each character. The forms are awkward and uncomfortable which is a common feeling to many when discussing the subject. Appropriately fitting, the letters were physically painful to form which left my hands red and raw.

The piece titled "Wal-Mart Sucks" changes the context of the wire hangers to that of cheap clothes. I chose this statement due to Wal-Mart\'s large economic support of the Republican Party, who as we all know, does not support the Roe V. Wade decision. (Plus, Wal-Mart sucks for many other reasons too!)

Currently I am pursuing my MFA in graphic design at Eastern Michigan University.

'

bio: 'Over the past two decades Paul Sych has had a curiosity for the relationship between art and music. This interplay began while studying at the Ontario College of Art and Design and York University\'s prestigious jazz program in Toronto, Canada. After completing his studies in the early 80\'s, Paul pursued his passion for jazz and performed professionally as a jazz guitarist exploring the art of improvisation. During this decade of creative exploration by means of practicing design, performing music, and early typographic discoveries, Paul decided to launch his own design firm Faith in the fall of 1990 as a platform for experimentation.

Paul has challenged both clients and peers alike to enter his world of unique and sometimes flamboyant use of type and imagery. In addition to being commissioned by legendary designers, art directors, educators and forums on typography internationally, his work has been widely published in North America, Europe and Asia over the last two decades. Paul continues to explore visual and typographic works in print, branding, public art, motion graphics and broadcast design. Bringing his experience to the design industry Paul\'s playfulness and meaningfulness with design has come full circle as he currently teaches typography and design at the Ontario College Of Art & Design and York University.

Quoting the late design historian Philip B. Meggs; "Sych\'s pulled and twisted letterforms, densely layered and imploding into complex masses teeming with perpetual energy, lose their identity as alphabetic glyphs. His work raises the question: Where does typography cease to be typography and become, perhaps, art?"

Faith

'

bio: 'Phonic is a sonic alphabet & virtual language: 26 short vocalizations using rendered sounds of English speech are cued by the keyboard to create a unique sonic landscape. A visual presentation plots grid-based glyphs shaped from the waveform produced by each sonic letter. As one types words and phrases, a new virtual language is spoken back; translated into songs and shapes that feel sometimes ambient, sometimes inspired, sometimes foolish. bio: 'Paula Scher studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and began her graphic design career as a record cover art director at both Atlantic and CBS Records in the 1970s. In 1984 she co-founded Koppel & Scher, and in 1991 she joined Pentagram as a partner.

Paula has developed identity and branding systems, promotional materials, environmental graphics, packaging and publication designs for a wide range of clients. Drawing from what Tom Wolfe has called the “big closet” of art and design history, classic and pop iconography, literature, music and film, Paula creates images that speak to contemporary audiences with emotional impact and appeal. Three decades into her career, these images have come to be visually identified with the cultural life of New York City.

Paula is a member of the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame and a past recipient of the Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design. She has served on the national board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and in 2001 she was awarded the profession’s highest honor, the AIGA Medal, in recognition of her distinguished achievements and contributions to the field. She holds an honorary doctorate from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, and she currently serves on the board of directors of The Public Theater. She is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).

Her work has been exhibited all over the world and is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the Denver Art Museum, the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Her teaching career includes over two decades at the School of Visual Arts, along with positions at the Cooper Union, Yale University and the Tyler School of Art. In 2002 Princeton Architectural Press published her career monograph Make It Bigger.

Pentagram

'

bio: 'Hundreds of dollars in various sassy under things - from practical to plaything, Panty Raid is composed of bras, panties, pasties, teddies, and negligés. The final character set even includes the nipple-less bra and crotch-less panty.

The extravagant, almost ridiculous, nature of these under things was a siren\'s folly calling out for us to play, and in doing so see these forms as letters which in the end make up this font.

We tossed these under things into the air so they would fall under the camera\'s lens with the desire that they would naturally form letters and punctuation with their straps, seams and panels of coverage. The process, albeit for font-making purposes, was physically no different than the thoughtless creation of that haphazard pile of underwear in the corner of the a dorm bedroom, or the impassioned shedding of the final undergarment in the heat of it all! And as if by magic, virtually all of the letters seemed to form themselves. As one might expect, the occasionally illegible \'toss\' did need to be molded touched and fondled–but just barely.

—

Gina Vieceli joined Thirst in 2002.
